Who is the Analyst Who Dreams the Patient and Who is the Supervisor Who Understands the Dream: The Third in Supervision

Abstract

In the current paper we sought to explore the parallel development of ideas about supervision in Psychoanalysis and the emergence of the concept of analytic third. Although this concept only took on a concrete reference in the works of Grotstein (1979, 2000) and Ogden (1994), it seemed to be already present in the minds and clinical work of various psychoanalysts, as was demonstrated through the exploration of several psychoanalytic triangles.
The importance of the concept of parallel process in supervision was highlighted, an unconscious process that leads to the analytical situation being reproduced in the supervision situation, enabling the supervisor to identify aspects that are not yet understood by the supervisee. In this way, the supervisor must be the one who dreams the dream not yet dreamed by the supervisee, so that the supervisee, in turn, can help the patient to dream.
