Love and Limitations to the Capacity to Love: Contributions from Otto Kernberg
Abstract
Romantic relationships are an almost universal subject in the psychiatric clinical practice, both because of the importance they assume for the majority of patients, and because of the suffering they often cause. Therefore, it is essential that the clinician access a theoretical body that will help him understand the dynamics of the couple. Based on the work of Otto Kernberg, the aim of this work is to explore how mature love develops and what mechanisms contribute to the stability of the couple, as well as to discuss how the cluster B personality disorders – namely, Borderline and Narcissistic – interfere with the establishment of healthy relationships.
